#### From Aluminum to Stainless Steel and Copper: An Engineering Analysis on Selecting Wash Chemistry and Thermal Parameters

In the industrial cleaning of metal components, the challenge is not simply removing stamping oils, cutting emulsions, or protective greases, but doing so while preserving the structural integrity and aesthetic finish of the washed surface. Treating a metal alloy with the wrong chemical solution or under uncontrolled temperature conditions triggers premature oxidation, pitting, dulling, or—in severe cases—caustic corrosion of the component.

Establishing a reliable, repeatable degreasing process prior to passivation, painting, or heat treatment requires balancing detergent chemistry with the specific properties of the target metal substrate.

#### **The pH Factor: Mapping Metal Alloy Reactivity**

The choice of detergent solution (neutral, acidic, or alkaline) is dictated by the chemical nature of the metal substrate. Each alloy reacts differently to the hydrogen potential (pH) of the wash bath:

- **Aluminum and Light Alloys:** aluminum is an amphoteric metal, making it exceptionally vulnerable to chemical attack. Strongly alkaline solutions (pH \> 9.5) dissolve its natural protective oxide layer, causing caustic surface etching, blackening, and pitting. For aluminum, neutral or slightly alkaline detergents (pH 7.5 – 8.5) formulated with corrosion inhibitors (such as silicates or phosphates) are required to safeguard the metal matrix during degreasing.
- **Carbon Steel and Stainless Steel:** steel tolerates highly alkaline environments (pH 11 – 13). Alkaline solutions leverage saponification to convert organic fats and vegetable oils into water-soluble soaps, aggressively removing carbon residues without compromising the iron substrate. Additionally, an alkaline environment provides temporary flash rust protection for carbon steel as it exits the bath.
- **Copper, Brass, and Yellow Alloys:** copper alloys are prone to staining and surface oxidation when exposed to aggressive chemistry or uninhibited alkaline detergents. The optimal operating range is neutral to slightly alkaline (pH 7 – 8.5), strictly avoiding complex chelating agents capable of dissolving copper.

#### **Thermal Energy Input: Viscoplastic Dynamics and Surfactant Limits**

Temperature serves as a physical accelerator for chemical processes. Elevating the wash bath temperature drastically reduces the viscosity of heavy greases and lapping pastes, bringing contaminants near their melting point and facilitating mechanical detachment.

However, thermal increases must adhere to two engineering constraints:

1. **Surfactant Cloud Point:** beyond a specific thermal threshold (typically between 60°C and 70°C, depending on the formulation), non-ionic surfactants in the detergent lose water solubility, separating from the solution and severely degrading degreasing efficiency.
2. **Oxidation Kinetics:** on sensitive alloys like aluminum and copper, elevated temperatures combined with extended dwell times in aqueous baths accelerate the formation of surface hydroxides, leaving irreversible discoloration or staining prior to drying.

### **Integrated Parameter Control: The UG-300 Solution**

Preventing surface defects and maintaining compatibility across diverse metals requires tight control over the Chemistry – Temperature – Mechanical Action triad. When processing small turnings, automotive parts, or components with intricate geometries and blind holes, conventional hydraulic action alone risks leaving shadowed, unwashed zones.

For these demanding applications, the engineering solution is the **UG-300**, the new 300-liter ultrasonic parts washer developed by Geicos Group, constructed entirely of stainless steel:

- **40 kHz Technology and Uniform Cavitation:** pressure waves generated by the transducers penetrate even the deepest internal channels, removing cutting oils and machining residues without altering the surface finish of sensitive alloys.
- **Side-Mounted Transducer Configuration:** positioned on the vertical walls rather than the tank bottom, the transducers prevent heavy sediments from settling on them and degrading ultrasonic efficiency over time, while streamlining maintenance operations.
- **Pneumatic "Dunking" Agitation:** ultrasonic cavitation is paired with a mechanical platform vertical motion that accelerates the macroscopic detachment of heavy sludge and continuously refreshes the detergent layer in contact with the part.
- **PLC Process Control:** the programmable PLC touchscreen enables precise setting and monitoring of bath temperature (preventing surfactant cloud point breaches or thermal shock on light alloys) and cycle durations.
- **Wash Bath Preservation:** standard equipment includes an oil skimmer and recirculation pump to continuously remove tramp oils separated from the surface, preventing contaminant redeposition on cleaned parts and extending the service life of the chemical solution.

Selecting the correct combination of detergent formulation, pH window, and operating temperature—paired with controlled ultrasonic technology—is the critical step toward eliminating scraps and ensuring optimal adhesion for subsequent surface treatments.
